Background

The project area was located along the CV‑820 road between KP 8+850 and KP 9+240, and at the intersection with the overpass of the Agost–Maigmó Greenway.

The CV‑820 road formed part of the Local Autonomous Road Network of the Generalitat Valenciana, connecting the towns of Agost and Novelda. It consisted of a single carriageway with two traffic lanes, one in each direction, with a total width of 9.00 metres including the shoulders.

The works were carried out both on the CV‑820 road itself and on the overpass of the Agost–Maigmó Greenway.

Scope of works

  • Address the road safety issue present on the CV‑820 road, approximately at KP 9+150, caused by the existing carriageway narrowing.
  • Ensure adequate protection for cyclists at this singular point, given that the CV‑820 between Agost and Novelda was designated as a “Safe Cycling Route”.
  • Provide a cycling connection from the Agost–Maigmó Greenway to the town of Agost, running parallel to the CV‑820 road.

The planned intervention followed the guidelines established at the time by the Regional Ministry of Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility, which were being applied to works and projects across the entire regional road network with the aim of improving road safety.

A distinctive feature of this project was the recovery and reuse of an old structure from Line L1 of the Alicante TRAM. After the line’s modernisation for new rolling stock, the structure no longer met current standards. However, this riveted steel structure, dating from 1916, remained in good condition and had been stored in the municipality of Teulada, representing a unique opportunity to reuse and enhance a valuable piece of industrial railway heritage.

The works consisted of demolishing the existing abutments of the former structure over the CV‑820 road, which created a narrow and low‑visibility section due to its clearance. The abutments were rebuilt following their original typology and after a prior heritage inventory, in order to accommodate the length of the new structure. The structure was transported from Teulada and, once on site, underwent sandblasting, repair of damaged metal elements—particularly gusset plates—and installation of the internal substructure forming the pedestrian walkway. The intervention also allowed for the reinstatement of two pressurised irrigation pipelines, which were installed along the outer sides of the structure. In addition, both the access from Agost and the structure itself were connected to the Agost–Maigmó Greenway (Alcoy–Monforte del Cid railway corridor) through a new access ramp on the southern side.
