Background

Thousands of agricultural workers travel the AL‑3111 road falls within the priority actions aimed at improving accessibility for agricultural workers in their daily journeys to their workplaces.

The demand came from the community. The response is infrastructure.

Improved quality of life for local workers is not a side effect — it is the point.

The Design

The design integrates seamlessly with the existing road grade and terrain — resolving drainage with minimal additional land take and keeping the solution buildable within available resources.

The result: safe, separated routes for cyclists and pedestrians, reduced vehicle speeds, and a direct contribution to SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

A pedestrian–cyclist lane was built on the right-hand side of the AL‑3111 road, from the junction with the Camino de Los Pelaos (KP 9+000) to KP 11+400. The standard separation between the carriageway and the cycle lane was 3.00 m, reduced only in justified cases.

The typical cross-section included a 2.50‑m‑wide cycle lane adjacent to the AL‑3111 carriageway and a 1.50‑m sidewalk on the outer side. Both elements were built at the same level and with similar paving.

In certain sections, the former service road was preserved to provide vehicular access from the S.A.T. Costa de Níjar roundabout to Hortofrucoop. In this area, the vehicular carriageway was 4 m wide, consisting of a 3.25‑m traffic lane and a 0.75‑m separation strip with kerbs between vehicular traffic and the pedestrian–cyclist lane.

The geometric conditions of the cycle lane were designed to integrate with the existing road grade line and terrain, minimizing drainage issues and additional land occupation.
