Improvement of Accessibility and Connectivity between Alboraia and Almàssera, Carraixet Ravine (Valencia)
CONSTRUCTION
PROJECT
UNDERPASS
The proposed solution arose from the need, on the one hand, to ensure continuity of the service roads along the Carraixet ravine, which also allow cycle–pedestrian use and were interrupted by the VT‑010 railway infrastructure; and, on the other hand, to improve connectivity between both banks of the Carraixet ravine through the creation of accessible cycle–pedestrian routes. These routes promote a sustainable and safe mobility model that encourages non‑motorised modes of transport.
Environmental Integration
In addition, the project sought to achieve integration into the surrounding agricultural environment, both in terms of the structure itself and the typical cross‑sections and construction materials used in the routes, adapting them to existing paths and to the landscape setting of the Huerta de València.
To enable accessible and safe non‑motorised movement between the urban centres of Alboraia and Almàssera, a new pedestrian footbridge was designed, attached to the structure of the existing railway crossing. The solution consists of a new deck connected to the piers of the existing bridge by means of steel arms anchored to them, forming three isostatic spans (23.50 + 16.00 + 23.50 m) with a clear width of 2.50 m, sufficient for non‑motorised use. The route is completed with new sections of cycle–pedestrian paths linking the footbridge to the existing road network.
Cultural Heritage
From the study of heritage‑related elements, as well as the assets and/or archaeological sites located within the area comprising the municipalities of Tavernes Blanques, Alboraia and Almàssera, it was concluded that the following heritage assets and/or elements are located within the scope of the project:
I. Carraixet Ravine drovers’ route
II. Ensemble formed by the Ermita de la Virgen de los Desamparados and the Cemetery of the Executed
III. Network of traditional irrigation channels associated with the Rascanya Irrigation Canal
IV. Capelleta dels Peixets, with the Ceramic Altarpiece of the Miracle of the Little Fish.
V. Landscape of the Alboraia–Almàssera Huerta, belonging to the l’Horta Nord area of València
The works included in the project are of a surface nature, as they focus on the upgrading of routes whose alignment coincides with the existing network of agricultural paths, increasing cycle–pedestrian connectivity between them. With regard to the structures, the footbridge was designed to be attached to the existing structure, making use of the existing foundations and respecting the deck elevation.
Only the construction of the underpasses required earthworks within the protected zone of the Carraixet ravine, in order to allow passage beneath the railway tracks parallel to the watercourse, while respecting the foundations of the FGV bridge over the ravine.
